The big city of the central aran economic-geographic region – Mingachevir

Abstract

The city of Mingachevir received the status of a city on November 11, 1948, and on February 4, 1954, it was transferred to the category of a subordinate city of the republic. The city of Mingachevir is located on the banks of the Kura River. The city borders Mingachevir Reservoir from the north, and Yevlakh district from the east, south and west. If we look at its etymology, there are different opinions about how the toponym «Mingachevir» came about. According to history, a battle between the Roman general Pompey and the Albanian king Oroiz took place here in the 1st century BC. According to historians, Oroizn's troops waited for Pompey's troops in the area of this dam. Oroyz divided part of his army into separate mangas, kept them in reserve, and ordered them when necessary with the words «shoot the manga». In addition, there is a possibility that it is related to the name of the Arab general Manichohr, who was sent to Azerbaijan to suppress the Elkhan movement.
